Apple blossom weevil

Anthonomus pomorum

Description

The apple blossom weevil (Anthonomus pomorum) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the Curculionidae family, within the order Coleoptera. This beetle is notorious for its destructive impact on fruit orchards, specifically targeting the flower buds of apple trees during the early spring period.

The primary host plant for this species is the domestic apple tree (Malus domestica), although it can occasionally affect pears. It is important to note that crops such as fodder beet, cabbage, hemp, peppers, barley, hops, and alfalfa are not susceptible to this pest, as it is strictly associated with pome fruit trees.

The life cycle of the apple blossom weevil is closely synchronized with the phenology of the apple tree. Adults overwinter in sheltered locations, such as bark crevices, leaf litter, or topsoil. As soon as temperatures rise above 6°C, the beetles emerge to feed on developing buds, using their long snouts to pierce the plant tissue and drink the sap.

The damage is primarily caused by the larvae, which hatch from eggs laid inside the buds. The larvae consume the inner parts of the flower, including the stamens and pistil. This prevents the bud from opening, causing it to turn brown and dry up into a characteristic "capped" blossom, which prevents fruit set and drastically reduces harvest yields.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. During early spring, physical control methods like jarring the trees to dislodge the beetles onto collection sheets can reduce population density. When monitoring reveals that the economic threshold has been reached, the application of targeted insecticides during the green cluster to pink bud stage is highly effective for population suppression.
