Loose smut of oats is a significant fungal disease caused by the pathogen Ustilago avenae. This disease specifically targets oat crops, leading to the destruction of the plant's reproductive organs. During the heading stage, the entire panicle is replaced by a black, powdery mass of spores that are easily dispersed by the wind to infect neighboring plants.
The primary symptoms appear at the time of panicle emergence. The spikelets are converted into a black dusty mass of chlamydospores, leaving behind only the bare central rachis. In some cases, the infection can also cause minor symptoms on the upper leaves, such as chlorotic streaks, although the most distinct signs remain the blackened, deformed reproductive structures.

Once inside the seedling, the mycelium grows systemically throughout the plant's life cycle.
